Have you ever found yourself crying out toward heaven, only to feel as though your words were bouncing off the ceiling? It is one of the most grueling trials of faith—the moment when our fervor strikes a wall of silence.
The modern world has conditioned us for instant gratification. We demand answers here and now, preferably in the form of a notification on a smartphone screen. Yet, a relationship with God eludes the logic of quick transactions.
God is Not a Vending Machine
We often confuse being heard with the execution of our own script. We treat Jesus like a celestial assistant tasked with fixing our schedules or clearing obstacles from our path. In reality, He is the Lord of life, not a contractor for our demands.
When we ask if Jesus is listening, we must first ask if we are even allowing Him to speak. Prayer is not about convincing God of our point of view, but about opening the heart to His presence—a presence that is often quiet and unassuming.
The Lesson from the Boat and the Silence Before Dawn
Recall the disciples on the lake during the storm. Jesus was sleeping in the boat while they fought for their lives. Their cry—“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”—is an echo of our own daily anxieties.
He heard them all along. His sleep was not a sign of indifference, but a manifestation of the peace that surpasses all understanding. Jesus did not merely calm the storm outside; primarily, He sought to still the fear within their hearts.
The Gospel reveals a God who listens not just with His ears, but with His whole Being. He does not collect statistics on our requests; He empathizes. Every tear, every whisper, and every awkward thought finds its resonance in Him.
Hope Hidden in Presence
Does Jesus hear us? Yes, but He does so in a manner worthy of God—viewing our lives through the lens of eternity rather than mere temporary comfort. Sometimes His answer is the strength to carry the cross, rather than its immediate removal.
The greatest proof that we are heard is the peace that settles in the heart after a sincere conversation with Him. This is not the result of self-hypnosis, but the fruit of an encounter with a Person who knows us better than we know ourselves.
Starting today, view your prayer not as a wish list, but as the building of a bond. Jesus listens to you even when you lack the words. He hears your very existence.
